Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects about 1 in 54 children in the United States, or about 1.4 million children. A study published in the journal Pediatrics found that 49% of children with ASD had attempted to elope at least once and 26% were missing long enough to cause concern. Of the children who went missing, most were in immediate danger of risks such as traffic or drowning.This threat of wandering necessitates that parents and caretakers of a child with ASD provide close supervision to ensure the child’s safety.
Unfortunately, constant supervision is not always feasible. What options are there for a parent whose child leaves the house in the middle of the night? Or for a child who wanders from the playground at school? Until now, caretakers have relied on antiquated barriers such as fences or special locks to prevent such disasters. In too many cases, caretakers may not even realize a child is missing until they are alerted by a passerby who noticed the child was in danger. The launch of CareBand marks the first complete solution for keeping children at risk of elopement safe.
CareBand is a wearable device designed to prevent wandering and alert caretakers if it does occur.
- The accompanying software allows a caretaker to configure a geofence and to receive automated alerts if the wearer of the CareBand leaves the area.
- If elopement does occur, parents and guardians can easily view real-time GPS location on the mobile application to help them safely locate the child.
- Finally, the CareBand wearable comes complete with an emergency alert button, which automatically alerts their caretaker and notifies them of the wearer’s location.
